The theory of Raman amplification is briefly reviewed together with the definition of Noise-Figure for distributed amplification. Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers and Raman Amplifiers are compared on the basis of their non-linear impact. An optimal configuration for Hybrid Raman/Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier is derived for the design of multi-span systems. Results obtained through the analytical formalisms are compared with accurate simulation result

GNPy model of the physical layer for open and disaggregated optical networking [Invited]

Networking technologies are fast evolving to support the request for ubiquitous Internet access that is becoming a fundamental need for the modern and inclusive society, with a dramatic speed-up caused by the COVID-19 emergency. Such evolution needs the development of networks into disaggregated and programmable systems according to the software-defined networking (SDN) paradigm. Wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) optical transmission and networking is expanding as physical layer technology from core and metro networks to 5G x-hauling and inter- and intra-data-center connections requiring the application of the SDN paradigm at the optical layer based on the WDM optical data transport virtualization. We present the fundamental principles of the open-source project Gaussian Noise in Python (GNPy) for the optical transport virtualization in modeling the WDM optical transmission for open and disaggregated networking. GNPy approximates transparent lightpaths as additive white and Gaussian noise channels and can be used as a vendor-agnostic digital twin for open network planning and management. The quality-of-transmission degradation of each network element is independently modeled to allow disaggregated network management. We describe the GNPy models for fiber propagation, optical amplifiers, and reconfigurable add/drop multiplexers together with modeling of coherent transceivers from the back-to-back characterization. We address the use of GNPy as a vendor-agnostic design and planning tool and as physical layer virtualization in software-defined optical networking. (C) 2022 Optica Publishing Grou

Considering Transmission Impairments in Wavelength Routed Networks

Abstract — We consider dynamically reconfigurable wavelength routed networks in which lightpaths carrying IP traffic are on demand established. We face the Routing and Wavelength Assignment problem considering as constraints the physical impairments that arise in all-optical wavelength routed networks. In particular, we study the impact of the physical layer when establishing a lightpath in transparent optical network. Because no signal transformation and regeneration at intermediate nodes occurs, noise and signal distortions due to non-ideal transmission devices are accumulated along the physical path, and they degrade the quality of the received signal. We propose a simple yet accurate model for the physical layer which consider both static and dynamic impairments, i.e., nonlinear effects depending on the actual wavelength/lightpath allocation. We then propose a novel algorithm to solve the RWA problem that explicitly considers the physical impairments. Simulation results show the effectiveness of our approach. Indeed, when the transmission impairments come into play, an accurate selection of paths and wavelengths which is driven by physical consideration is mandatory. I

Electronic equalization for advanced modulation formats in dispersion-limited systems

    Get PDF
We investigate in this letter the use of electronic equalization on dispersion limited systems for different modulation formats. Besides analyzing equalization on standard NRZ intensity modulation as a reference, we focus on two advanced modulation formats, Duobinary and Differential Phase Shift Keying (DPSK) which are recently gaining large attention. We demonstrate that the introduction of an electronic equalizer strongly improves standard NRZ performance, whereas it has a limited effect on Duobinary and DPSK formats. Moreover, we give rules for the optimal choice of the equalizer transversal filter parameters, i.e., the number of taps and the delay between taps

Advanced Formulation of QoT-Estimation for Un-established Lightpaths Using Cross-train Machine Learning Methods

Planning tools with excellent accuracy along with precise and advance estimation of the quality of transmission (QoT) of lightpaths (LPs) have techno-economic importance for a network operator. The QoT metric of LPs is defined by the generalized signal-to-noise ratio (GSNR) which includes the effect of both amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise and non-linear interference (NLI) accumulation. Typically, a considerable number of analytical models are available for the estimation of QoT but all of them require the exact description of system parameters. Thus, the analytical models are impractical in case of un-used network scenarios. In this study, we exploit an alternative approach based on three machine learning (ML) techniques for QoT estimation (QoT-E). The proposed ML based techniques are cross-trained on the characteristic features extracted from the telemetry data of the already in-service network. This new approach provides a reliable QoT-E and consequently assists the network operator in network planning and also enables the reliable low-margin LP deployment

We analyze propagation effects in the coexistence of GPON, XG-PON, RF-Video and TWDM-PON. We show that high power TWDM-PON channels excite Stimulated Raman Scattering inducing extra-loss on GPON due to power depletion. We address the problem through simulations and propose and validate a simple analytical model for the effec

We compare the networking merit of multiple bands - U-to-O band - by exploiting the installed cables (BDM) vs multiple parallel fibers (SDM). Despite the better transmission performance, SDM only enables 15% more traffic than BDM on the German network and the European network for cardinality up to 5
